HMD Invented and Patented Sealless Magnetic Drive Pump Technology

Below are 7 Reasons Why HMD Remains the World’s leading Sealless Magnetic Drive Pump Manufacturer

HMD invented and patented sealless magnetic drive pump technology in the 1940s. During the last 7+ decades, tens of thousands of HMD sealless magnetic drive pumps have been deployed in a wide range of industries, including chemical, industrial, refining, pharmaceutical and renewable energy applications.

Today, HMD Kontro continues to enhance and expand its market-leading product line. Below are 7 reasons why operators choose HMD Kontro Sealless Magnetic Drive pumps.

Legacy

HMD Invented Sealless Mag Drive Pumps

HMD Kontro was founded in 1946 as Hydraulic & Mechanical Developments, Ltd. One year later (1947) HMD pioneered the first sealless magnetic drive pump in Eastbourne, UK and shortly afterwards, supplied the first ever HMD pump to ICL chemicals for a hot oil application.

In 1954, The Kontro Company Inc. was founded in Massachusetts (USA). Sixteen years later (1970), HMD pumps were introduced to the US market, with Kontro Pumps acting as HMD’s U.S. distributor. In 1994 Sundyne acquired both HMD and Kontro Pumps to form Sundyne’s magnetic drive pump division. For a further timeline of HMD’s historical milestones, click here.

Coverage

To Meet a Wide Range of Application Requirements

HMD’s CSA/CSI sealless magnetic drive pump range features an expanded number of hydraulic sizes and design features that optimize performance and efficiency, complementing HMD’s existing broad portfolio of ASME, ISO and API pump products that provide extensive flow, head and temperature coverage meeting the needs of a vast range of pump applications.

The HMD CSA/CSI range provides full compliance to ASME B73.3 and ISO 2858 / 15783 dimensional, performance and construction standards with a simple, modular design, featuring maximum standardization and interchangeability of parts.

The newly released CSA/CSI Frame 2 range expands the duty coverage of the existing CSA/CSI Frame 1, utilizing industry leading hydraulic designs that extend the flow / head boundary coverage for Frame 1 and 2 size models, accommodating a wide range of  duties whilst keeping the pump footprint and overall cost to a minimum.

Close-coupled and separately mounted variants are available along with a wide range of options, including secondary control or containment, instrumentation and various bearing isolation and lubrication options. The range is specifically designed for maximum part interchangeability, ease of on-site service and has a wide number of site-upgradeable features. For more information, click here.

Availability & Ease of Upgrades

Via a Streamlined, Modular Design

The modular design of the HMD’s CSA/CSI line maximizes standardization and part interchangeability providing maximum design coverage with minimized component variations and facilitates simple upgrades to existing pumps. This modular design also makes it easier for Channel Partners to stock less inventory, and deliver a solution that meets many application needs, providing faster delivery times to customers.

Streamlined components can be used across the product line, which reduces spare parts inventories, and helps to reduce operating budgets. Additional benefits include:

  • Modular design for maximum interchangeability of parts
  • Fast upgrade onsite with streamlined commissioning
  • No special tools required for upgrade or maintenance
  • Online selection & configuration capabilities simplify procurement
  • Reduced pump downtime thanks to maintenance time savings
  • Future-Proof investments thanks to easy upgrades.

Safety

HMD’s High Integrity Design & Secondary Sealing Options Offer the Safest Solution for Pumping Harsh Chemicals

For applications that involve very low or high temperatures, high pressures and volatile, toxic or aggressive liquids, sealless magnetic drive pumps have become a preferred alternative to traditional sealed pumps. With no seals, HMD sealless pumps eliminate potential leak paths and any risk of fugitive emissions that can harm productivity, employees and the environment.

For processes involving especially hazardous chemicals, secondary control or containment options are available for the CSA/CSI and other HMD pump ranges that assure complete safety and emissions control, by providing additional safeguarding against any breaches of primary containment.

Secondary control provides an intermediate level of protection and ensures any leakage through the primary shell is restricted, and secondary containment provides the highest level of security and safety, by ensuring that any leakage is fully contained within the confines of the pump. Other design enhancements within the HMD CSA/CSI range, such as the integrated “bump” rings, containment shell vortex breaker and the non-metallic ZeroLoss shell option that eliminates eddy current heating issues, all help increase the safety profile and reliability extending MTBR and plant uptime.

Affordability

“Did you know?” the HMD CSA/CSI is Competitively Priced when Compared to Other Sealless Pumps

  • Initial Capital Costs – Since the release of the CSA/CSI, HMD’s ASME/ISO sealless pump line is now 20-30% less expensive than the legacy pump range, and provides a price competitive sealless pump solution that benefits from a market leading design with the highest levels of quality, safety and performance.

  • Operating Costs – With the sealless design and elimination of mechanical seals and their support systems, HMD pumps have zero consumable items and lower operational costs than mechanical seal pumps, with no seals to replace or barrier fluids to replenish, treat or dispose of.  The HMD ZeroLoss containment shell provides additional operational savings through the removal of shell induction losses and reduced energy costs compared with sealless pumps with conventional metallic shells.

  • Commissioning – HMD pumps are easier and less expensive to install and commission, from the elimination of seal cooling / flushing system piping,  less instrumentation and DCS configuration, and reduced documentation / HAZOP requirements.

  • Maintenance – The simple design of HMD pumps means they can be serviced and repaired on site with no need for special tools or specialist operator expertise, reducing costs associated with repairs and downtime.  HMD pumps feature non-wearing internal bearings and have negligible spare parts consumption, further reducing maintenance costs.

  • Total Cost of Ownership – Selecting an HMD pump helps lower other lifecycle costs. Examples of these include the costs associated with un-planned downtime and loss of production, which are minimized with HMD sealless pumps through the increased reliability and site serviceability, and the leak-free design with no risk of fugitive emissions eliminates any environmental / clean-up costs.

Flexibility

Legacy, Expertise & Breadth of Solutions for Pump Applications

Sealless pumps are specifically designed to safely handle fluids found in chemical markets such as chlor-alkali, agricultural chemicals, fine inorganic chemicals, isocyanates, plastics and polymers. HMD Kontro sealless pumps also meet the requirements of other industries such petrochemicals, refining, alkylation, battery manufacturing, water & wastewater treatment, pharmaceuticals, food & beverage and renewable energy industries such as hydrogen electrolysis and SAF / renewable fuel production.

Since pioneering the sealless magnetic drive pump in the 1940’s, HMD Kontro has been at the forefront of the liquid handling industry. Using modern engineering and technologies developed over decades, HMD Kontro pumps offer numerous benefits, including:
