Sundyne Integrally Geared HMP Pumps in Critical PTA Plant Service

PTA (Purified Terephthalic Acid) is one of the largest-volume commodity chemicals; it comes in the form of a fine white powder. It is the primary raw material for production of high-purity polyester resins, which are widely used in production of polyester fiber, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle resin, polyester film, and engineered plastics.
The global PTA market is expected to keep growing to meet the demand of the textile and packaging markets. When a new PTA plant was approved for 1.5 million tons of PTA per year, the EPC and customer turned to Sundyne. Sundyne HMP-series centrifugal pumps have been the preferred choice worldwide for High-Pressure Reactor Feeds used in the purification stage of the PTA production process.
Sundyne HMP high-pressure pumps are integrally geared centrifugal pumps that come in single or multistage configurations. In this PTA Reactor Feed application, a single stage achieved the required high head with optimized efficiency at the rated point. Sundyne HMP’s are the best suited pumps to handle the mixture of TA slurry and water going into the reactor due to the open clearances between the Barske impeller and the casing.

Sundyne designs and manufactures custom engineered modular pump packages for a variety of applications. The pictures above show the HMP-7000 single stage pump installed on the pedestal of the main skid. For added package flexibility, the lube oil system is supplied as a separate lube oil console skid. A custom noise blanket covering the pump case and gearbox was included in the scope of supply to meet the sound pressure level requirement.
