Sundyne OH6 Pumps Play a Critical Role at a Major Greenfield Refinery in India

Petroleum refineries transform crude oil into useable petroleum products for use as fuels for transportation, heating, paving roads, generating electricity, and as feedstocks for making chemicals.

The refining process breaks crude oil down into its various components, which are then reconfigured into new products. All refineries have three basic steps: separation, conversion and treatment.

Separation or distillation typically takes place in two units, first in an atmospheric distillation unit, also known as the Crude Oil Distillation Unit (CDU), second in the Vacuum Distillation Unit (VDU) where the residue from atmospheric distillation is further processed. These processing units are some of the most critical in any petroleum refineries. The CDU/VDU distills the incoming crude oil into various fractions of different boiling ranges, and each fraction is then processed again by the other refining units.
Sundyne’s LMV single-stage integrally geared pumps are the preferred solution for the following liquids in the CDU/VDU:
  • Reflux: purified liquid from the top of the distillation tower. Reflux is cooled and pumped back to the top of the tower to further purify the liquid.
  • Overhead: top product from the tower.
  • Bottoms/Residue: liquid product that comes from the bottom of the distillation tower.
  • Pump-around: a stream off the side of the distillation tower that is pumped around to remove heat or is a feed to another tower.
Services with these liquids frequently require low flow & high head and involve low specific gravity liquids with high vapor pressure. Situations where the suction pressure and temperature rise - and NPSHr/NPSHa are not carefully managed could cause cavitation in the pump. Sundyne is the foremost expert at designing pumps with inducers and carefully matched hydraulics that avoid cavitation and ensure proper operation for “bubble point” liquids. The advantages of the Sundyne integrally geared OH6 pumps are:
  • Simplicity of maintenance of a single stage pump that delivers the performance of a multistage pump
  • High reliability due to a robust and compact design
  • High efficiency due to custom-sized hydraulics to match the Best Efficiency Point to the application conditions
  • Ease of rerate, should the process conditions change over time.
Sundyne pumps are also used in other services throughout the refineries, in various treatment units. The pictures below are examples of LMV-322 pumps in amine and spent caustic services.
